Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, is a cosmopolitan and lively city that is home to many different types of scenery, including skyscrapers, parkland and even an artificial beach. Brisbane is a river city, although close to the coast, with the Brisbane River running through it. It is surrounded by hills and full of bridges. Brisbane also gives easy access to a number of attractions as well as the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast. Brisbane offers loads of tourist accommodation available, including hostels, hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts and campsites. Most of the accommodation and restaurants can be found in the cities' inner suburbs.

The majority of the hostels can be found in East Brisbane, Fortitude Valley, New Farm, Paddington, Petrie Terrace and the West End. The hotels are situated around Gregory Terrace, Main Street and Wickham Street. The main transit centre can be found on Roma Street, there is also a large mall on Queen Street.

In its early stages the city grew as the agricultural and mining industries grew, until it eventually developed into the cultural and cafe filled city that it is today. It is also the third largest city in Australia with a population of about 1.6 million.

Brisbane is a great place to cycle, with wonderful tracks near and along the river. If you get tired along the way you can always hop on a bus or the City Cat (avoiding rush hour when you won't be allowed on). You can hire bikes from Brisbane Bicycle and Hires and Sales.

South Bank Parklands: An arbour of bougainvillea provides a one-kilometre walkway through the length of Brisbane's South Bank parklands. It is considered the defining symbol of the arts, entertainment and leisure precinct across the river from the city's central business district.
In 1988 this was the site of the World Expo. South Bank is said to be recognised internationally as one of the most successful redeveloped World Expo sites in the world and is used by other Expo cities as the benchmark for creating a premier destination.
Today, South Bank is in fact the one place in Brisbane where visitors can find most of the city's attractions in close proximity to one another.

Mt. Coot-tha: Mt Coot-tha offers wonderful views of the city and surrounding areas from its lookout 8 km West of the city. You can see as far as the Glass House Mountains to the North, Gold Coast hinterland to the South and Moreton and Stradbroke Islands to the East. Mt Coot-tha is also a great place for walking. There are various trails giving spectacular views of the scenery, and an Aboriginal art Trail where you can see tree carvings and rock paintings.
At the foot of the mountain are the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens, containing around 20,000 species of plants. You can visit the gardens everyday from 8:30am - 5:30pm and join a tour at 11:00am or 1:00pm (not Sunday). As well as rainforest and tropical dome, you will also find the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium with afternoon shows between Wednesday - Sunday.

When the 4th APCS was held in Brisbane between October 20 and 22, 2003, Mr. Gi-chan Goo, Vice Mayor of Daejeon Metropolitan City and Mr. Tim Quinn, Lord Mayor of Brisbane planted a Magnolia tree at the botanic gardens of Mt. Coot-tha in Brisbane, commemorating the sister city relationship between Daejeon and Brisbane.

You can get to Mt. Coot-tha on bus number 471 which leaves from the corner of Adelaide and Albert Streets between 9:15am and 3:15pm, with the last returning bus at 3:50pm. The bus drops you off at the base of the mountain so be prepared for an uphill trek. Alternatively hop on the City Heights Tour leaving at 2:00pm from Adelaide Street in the city.

Moreton Bay: Named by Captain Cook after the Earl of Morton, Moreton Bay is Brisbane's shorefront - a vast expanse of water sheltered by the major sand islands of Bribie, Moreton and North Stradbroke and sprinkled with scores of smaller islands that create a labyrinth of waterways and form stepping stones to the Gold Coast.
The Bay offers visitors a host of attractions and activities - the charm of established seaside bayside resorts; National Parks that preserve the tracts of wilderness on the islands; holiday resorts that attract not just humans but dolphins and birds; a rich history of Aboriginal culture; heritage precincts that evoke the images of yesteryear; and waters that are a joy to sail, fish, swim, dive or just relax by. It's little wonder that Moreton Bay has a special place in the hearts of Brisbane locals.
